Narrator: This is Science Today. A stress reduction program, which combines relaxation techniques with regular exercise, has been found to help diabetic men significantly reduce excessive abdominal fat, which is linked to stress. Researcher Elissa Epel of the University of California, San Francisco, says diabetics are particularly vulnerable to the effects of stress.
Epel: They have much more abdominal fat to start with and during times of stress keeping their blood sugars within a healthy range becomes much more difficult.
Narrator: So the researchers put a group of male diabetics on a three-month stress reduction program, which included daily relaxation techniques, on top of exercise and found this group lost more fat than those just exercising.
Epel: What we think is happening is that their abdominal fat is more easily mobilized because they're reducing their stress hormones and so if they continue their daily care program of walking more, etc. they will be more successful in burning off that extra fat than men who may be walking the same amount but not adding the relaxation to it.
