Narrator: This is Science Today. If you've been struggling to lose weight and have tried every fad diet and new pill on the market to no avail, there may be a solution. In fact, a new obesity treatment developed by Laurel Mellin of the University of California, San Francisco, is called The Solution.
Mellin: The Solution teaches people, trains them in the six most basic skills that give balance in life. These are the skills that we learn naturally by the age of six if we're raised in a responsive environment. It has nothing to do parental love, it has to do with parental skill.
Narrator: These six skills include what Mellin calls an internal dialogue of self-nurturing and effective limit setting, which are passed on by responsive parents who were not depriving or indulging. Study participants who were followed for six years were found to keep the weight off. But Mellin says before you opt for the Solution, make sure you're ready for it.
Mellin: It's for people who say to themselves...I've had it. I won't go on another diet, I won't take pills and I won't just live with this problem.
Narrator: For Science Today, I'm Larissa Branin.
