Judy Sakaki, Vice President
Judy Sakaki became UC's Vice President for Student Affairs in January 2007. For Dr. Sakaki coming to the UC Office of the President marked a return to Oakland, where she was born and where she graduated from Elmhurst Junior High and Skyline High School. A first-generation college student, she received her bachelor's and master's degrees in 1975 and 1977, respectively, from California State University, Hayward, and received her Ph.D. in education from UC Berkeley in 1991. Her two sons are UC graduates as well.
In 2002, Sakaki joined UC Davis as Vice Chancellor of the Division of Student Affairs, and oversaw programs and services to enhance the academic and personal development of students. From 1995 to 2002, she served first as Dean of Students and then as Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs at California State University, Fresno. Prior to that, from 1976 to 1994, she served in a variety of capacities focused on students at CSU Hayward (now CSU East Bay), including Executive Director of Student Academic Services and Special Assistant to the President for Educational Equity. Sakaki currently serves as a trustee of the College Board, a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum, a member of the National Vice Presidents' Group, an executive officer of Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and is a former fellow of the American Council on Education.
Vice President Sakaki has been dedicated to issues of access and equity for decades, starting out at the Hayward campus as an outreach and retention counselor in the Educational Opportunity Program. She has substantial experience with diverse student populations, as well as an impressive ability to forge links between student services and academic programs. Sakaki possesses a deep understanding of education issues both in California and nationally, and a clear commitment to preserving access to a University of California education for high-achieving students of all backgrounds in our state.
