ELC Notifications

UC begins mailing ELC notification letters to students at the end of August, and these letters continue through September. School transcript submissions are processed in the order in which they are received.

High schools receive school reports noting the evaluation results for each of the students submitted. High schools also receive these students' ELC identification numbers. If a student loses his or her ELC identification number, he or she should contact the high school counselor.

There are three outcomes of the evaluation.

ELC Students: These students have achieved eligibility in the local context. They have a minimum UC-calculated GPA of 3.0, have completed a specific pattern of at least 11 academic courses and rank in the top 4 percent of their high school class. For schools with magnet programs, the top 4 percent of students within each magnet program and within the regular school each received ELC eligibility. Students whose GPAs were tied with those in the top 4 percent were also identified as eligible in the local context.

To complete their eligibility to the University, students identified as eligible in the local context must complete all coursework requirements for freshman admission by the end of their senior year, as well as take all required tests—two SAT Subject Tests and either the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test—no later than December of senior year of high school.

Students who are on track to statewide eligibility: These students are on track to obtain statewide eligibility to the University of California. They have a minimum UC-calculated GPA of 3.0, have completed a specific pattern of at least 11 academic courses and rank below the top 4 percent but within the top 12.5 percent of their high school class as determined by UC. Statewide eligibility and ELC eligibility have exactly the same guarantee: admission to the University, although not necessarily to the campus or major of choice. These students are some of the top students in the state, and the University strongly encourages these students to take a rigorous curriculum in the senior year, take all required tests and submit an application to the University of California.

Students who are not yet on track to statewide eligibility: These students are currently perceived not to be on track to statewide eligibility to the University, based on the coursework and test scores reported on the high school transcript. Courses not included on the high school transcript or submitted by the high school prior to students receiving their results are not considered in the evaluation. Many of these students become statewide eligible in their senior year and are encouraged to pursue a rigorous curriculum in the senior year of high school, take all required tests and submit an application to the University of California.

Questions About ELC Evaluation Results

You may learn about how ELC determinations are made by reading our section on ELC Requirements and the Evaluation Process. You will also want to review our Frequently Asked Questions about the selection of ELC students.

If you still have questions about your ELC evaluation after reading the website, you may contact the ELC program team in two ways: through the ELC Help Desk or through our e-mail address.

ELC Help Desk: (800) 839-8507. The Help Desk is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., from May 1 to December 1.

Information to Provide in E-mail Inquiries

The ELC team can best answer your e-mail inquiry if you provide the following information along with your question:

Name of student
Name of school the student attends
Name of city where the school is located

The ELC program does NOT require a Social Security number to look up student records; there is no reason to send Social Security numbers to ELC. Nor does the ELC program require the ELC identification number to look up student records.

Response Time to ELC Evaluation Questions

The ELC team makes returning phone calls and e-mails a top priority. At the same time, we want to give each person the time and attention they deserve. As a result, sometimes it can take up to two weeks to return phone calls and answer e-mail inquiries.
