ELC and
Statewide Eligibility and Admissions
Eligibility in the Statewide Context and Eligibility in the Local
Context are the two main paths to freshman eligibility. California high
school students who attain eligibility in the statewide context
or eligibility in the local context are both guaranteed a space
at the University of California, though not necessarily the campus
or major of choice. ELC and statewide eligibility
provide the same guarantee.
Eligibility in the Statewide
Context (statewide eligibility) is the pathway by which most students attain UC eligibility and is determined when a student applies to the University. To be eligible in the statewide context, students must have a high school diploma or equivalency, and satisfy certain subject, scholarship and examination requirements. To be statewide eligible, students must satisfactorily complete a specific pattern of 15 UC-approved courses by the end of the senior year, take two SAT Subject Tests and either the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test no later than December 2007, have a minimum UC GPA of 3.0 and meet the eligibility index. For more details about statewide eligibility, please visit the Freshman Admission section of the UC Admissions site.
Eligibility in the Local
Context (ELC) is determined during the summer between the junior
and senior years of high school. Students are notified of their eligibility in
the fall semester of their senior year of high school before they apply to the
University. To be eligible in the local context, a student must attend an eligible
school that participates in the program, have his or her transcript submitted
to UC with the high school's ELC submission packet, satisfactorily complete a
specific pattern of 11 UC-approved courses by the end of the junior year and be
ranked in the top 4 percent of his or her high school class according to
UC ELC evaluation rules. Students who are eligible
in the local context must do the following to complete their eligibility and be
admitted to the University:
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA
- Complete all coursework requirements for freshman admission
by the end of senior year
- Take two SAT Subject Tests and either the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test - no later than the December test date, and
- Apply to the University by the November 30 application deadline.
Applying
to the University
Students who apply via the statewide and ELC eligibility
paths use the same UC application forms and need to submit their
completed UC applications by the November 30 deadline.
The
University's Online Application
All students whose transcripts were sent to the University for ELC evaluation will have an online application started for them at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply. Students should select the link indicated for ELC applicants and enter their ELC identification number.
These applications will already contain demographic information
(such as name and address). Students will need to verify the demographic information and enter all coursework
and test scores. Be sure
to enter in-progress coursework for your senior year.
Application
Process
Students identified as eligible in the local context may apply
to any campus or multiple campuses and will be evaluated for selection
by each campus, as are statewide applicants. You can read more about
freshman eligibility and admission requirements at the Freshman Admission page.
