Studies the biomechanics of many marine vertebrates and invertebrates with particular emphasis on the role and evolution of biomaterials. Includes work on the tiled mineral of shark skeletons, the tendon of hagfishes and the stiffness of shark spines. Applies the tools and techniques of engineering and mathematics to biological systems from the whole organism to the molecular constituents of particular tissues. Work is both theoretical and experimental and aims to place the evolution of tissues and biomaterials at the forefront of the field of bioengineering. |
