UNIVERSITY
OF CALIFORNIA MARINE COUNCIL (UCMC)
CHARGE
(August 24, 1999)
The mission
of the UC Marine Council is to provide leadership and direction
to the University of California to perform a major role in the coordination
of marine policy, research, education, and public service and the
exercise of responsible stewardship of marine resources.
The UC Marine
Council will:
- Coordinate
and foster interaction and communication among marine policy,
research, and public service programs within UC through regular
communication channels such as symposia and workshops;
- Facilitate
intercampus marine research and education programs and access
to marine facilities and courses at all campuses;
- Provide
advice to and help formulate positions on behalf of the Office
of the President for marine science research, education, policy,
and public service;
- Provide
leadership for collaborations and interactions among marine-related
industries, UC, and non-UC science and education programs (including
the States private universities, California State Universities,
California Community Colleges, and marine-related non-profit
organizations and institutes).
- Provide
information/knowledge, advice, research, and recommendations
to local, regional and California State Government, and governmental
agencies pertaining to Californias ocean-related issues and
concerns (fisheries/fishing, aquaculture, resource development
and management, climate/sea level/coastal hazards, etc.);
- Interpret
marine science, technology, and education to the public, particularly
through outreach programs to K-12;
- Work with
campus Federal Government Relations Officers and the UC Office
of Federal Governmental Relations in Washington D.C. to represent
the interests and needs of UCs marine research programs;
- Work with
federal agencies and organizations (e.g., National Science Foundation,
Office of Naval Research, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Administration, California Sea Grant College Program), intergovernment
organizations, and international private entities with marine-related
programs (e.g., Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education,
Ocean Government Study Group) to promote University research
and effective management of marine resources.
