DESCRIPTION

The Research Conference Fund supports meetings and conferences that bring together inter-disciplinary faculty from three or more campuses of the University to share research results, develop new intercampus and multicampus research collaborations, and secure support for research from extramural sources. Awards typically range from $1000 to $3000.

ELIGIBILITY

The research conference fund supports research-based conferences convened by UC faculty primarily for other UC faculty and researchers. Faculty from all campuses of the University of California are eligible to apply for and receive support from this fund. The application process is informal; there are no application forms. Requests for funding may be submitted by email ( ). The request should meet the following criteria to be eligible for funding.

  • A list of confirmed UC faculty participants and (optionally) graduate students from at least three campuses, not including the host campus. Campus affiliation of each participant is also to be provided;
  • The originality of the research: a description of what is new or innovative about this gathering;
  • The interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary nature of the proposed conference;
  • The anticipated outcomes of the proposed conference.
  • A budget and budget justification which explains why existing funding is not unavailable or sufficient to cover the cost of the proposed conference activities. Since the conference fund is limited to the support of UC participants, the budget should clearly identify expenses related to this group; and
  • Confirmed or anticipated financial support from other sources of funding.

The Research Conference Fund does not support:

  • Local meetings or conferences of national or international organizations, even when they are convened by UC faculty;
  • One in a series of conferences or periodically-scheduled events convened by UC faculty;
  • Meetings with primary emphases on curriculum and instruction; and
  • Travel or accommodations of participants other than UC faculty and graduate students.

Decisions concerning awards reflect adherence to these guidelines and availability of funds at the time of the request. Due to the modest size of the program, awards will normally be made only once every four years to the same group of scholars. The purpose of this policy is to direct funding to new collaborations, not to support ongoing ones.

DEADLINES

Proposals may be submitted at any time, but should be received well in advance of the conference. Notification will usually be made within two weeks of the submission.
