Subject: Animal Assurance Numbers
Pursuant to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guide issued July 25, 1985, Volume 14, Number 8, Institutional Animal Welfare Assurance numbers should be referenced when submitting letter verification of review board approval of proposed research projects or other activities involving the care and use of animals.
The following lists the Animal Assurance numbers previously assigned and currently in effect for the University of California:

Enclosure I is a copy of the NIH Guide page showing a sample verification letter. As instructed, institutions are to reference the old assurance number until the new numbers are assigned based upon the new assurance materials submitted January 1, 1986. Some delay is expected before such new numbers are available.
