PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENT
The purpose of this document is to advise UC faculty, students and staff of changes in policies and operations as a result of converting from a self-supporting Summer Session to State-supported instruction during the summer. The document will evolve as decisions are made regarding the many aspects of this conversion; some caveats with respect to its use are therefore in order.

WHAT IS THE CHANGE AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT ME?
Summer instruction will be funded by a combination of State funds and student revenues, rather than student fees alone. Each campus will make its own decision about the calendar of instruction, about courses that will be available, and who will teach them.
What this change means
for UC students; for faculty; for staff.

WHY IS THIS CHANGE BEING MADE?
Year-round instruction--another term for State-supported summer instruction--is one of several strategies UC campuses are using to accommodate substantial and rapid enrollment growth. Campuses will save on construction of new classrooms if they teach more students during the summer. Students will be able, if they choose, to make more rapid progress toward their degree, thereby making room for more students. For more information on enrollment growth:

WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATUS OF CONVERSION?
The State has provided funding for the first year of a several-year conversion period, to be used to make the fees UC students pay on all campuses in summer 2001 equivalent to regular-term student fees. Also, the Governor has proposed full instructional funding for UC students attending during the summer at the Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara campuses, beginning in summer 2001. State instructional funding for other campuses will be budgeted in future years.
