"Transfer Prep Paths" Make Major Prep Easier
The University of California has unveiled the first of its Transfer Preparation Paths, tools that outline the major preparation requirements for certain disciplines across UC campuses. The PDF documents can be downloaded from the University’s new transfer website, UCTransfer.org. The Transfer Preparation Paths were developed in response to SB652, which calls on UC to make it easier for transfer students to identify community college courses that meet major preparation requirements at the University. The documents are available in two versions: one systemwide, the other campus-specific. The UC Statewide Transfer Preparation Paths are good starting points for students who are unsure which campus they want to attend. These paths summarize the major preparation requirements at each UC campus for similar majors, and highlight the common requirements shared by a majority of UC campuses. The statewide paths also include a description of the major or discipline, the name of the major on each campus, campus-specific selection criteria and general education requirements. Students who know which campus they want to attend should look at the UC Campus-specific Transfer Preparation Paths. Listing the required and suggested preparation for a specific major at a specific campus, these provide a description of the major, including specializations, emphases and options. The campus-specific paths also list related majors and summarize lower-division major preparation, noting requirements that are common at other UC campuses. So far, Transfer Preparation Paths for Biology, Chemistry, History and Psychology are available. By next summer, Transfer Paths should be available for the top 20 UC majors. The Transfer Preparation Paths are the centerpiece of UCTransfer.org. The website, which is in it first phase of development, offers information about transfer eligibility, IGETC, and general education and University requirements, and is arranged to guide transfer students from choosing a major to applying to the University. In the coming months, features and tools will be added to the site to simplify transfer to UC. In addition, visitors to UCTransfer.org are encouraged to use the feedback form to share their ideas on making the site better. |
