Documenting LOTE Proficiency

High school students can satisfy the language other than English (LOTE) requirement in several ways besides successfully completing two years of high school coursework. Course grades appear on the transcript, but documentation of other methods are a different matter. Here's some guidance.

College coursework: Admitted students will need to have an official college transcript sent before enrolling. For ELC consideration, the high school transcript should show the courses taken, the institution, and grades earned.

Standardized tests: Students should have official score reports for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and SAT Subject Exams sent to UC. For ELC, the high school transcript should show the test taken, the date and the score earned.

Formal schooling in a language other than English: To document two years of instruction in a school where the language of instruction was not English, students should submit a transcript from that school. (The schooling must be after the sixth grade.)

Assessment by a University: Most language departments at universities will conduct an assessment and issue a statement of competency on official letterhead, which would serve as certification. For ELC, the high school transcript should note who assessed the student, the name of the institution and the date.

Certification by high school principal: In cases where the options described above are not available, the high school principal can certify that the student has attained competency equivalent to one or two years of college-preparatory language other than English. The certification should be based on the judgment of language teachers, advice of professional or cultural organizations with an interest in maintaining language proficiency or other appropriate source of expertise. Language placement exams may be used. Admitted students may be asked to provide additional information from their high school principal, such as a signed letter on the school's letterhead.

For ELC, the high school transcript can show the principal's certification of competency with the language and the level.
