Public Service Minor Initiated at UCSD
A new academic program that focuses on public service in the not-for-profit
sector is underway at the University of California, San Diego.
Initiated by Thurgood Marshall College, the public service minor
will be available to all UCSD students campus-wide in the fall quarter.
Its series of seven courses and internships allows undergraduates
to couple the intellectual histories of four areas education,
government, social research and health with internships
performed in local non-profit organizations dedicated to those four
services.
According to Cecil Lytle, Thurgood Marshall College provost, the
new program is the first UC program that offers academic credit
for the study of the not-for-profit sector and requires students
to serve internships with local non-profit organizations.
"We expect students, regardless of major, to become more familiar
with the history and practical roles that non-profit organizations
play in the development and maintenance of participatory democracy
for all citizens," said Lytle.
