  • UC Riverside's Biomedical Sciences Program, a seven-year accelerated B.S./M.D. program, has been renamed UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences.

Haider, the program's namesake, is a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon from Riverside. In 1997, Haider pledged all profits to UCR from his specialized "pedicle screw," a piece of hardware he designed for use in spinal surgeries. His gift is worth at least $5 million, but possibly much more, depending on how often the pedicle screw is used by other surgeons.

Grant to Help UCR Celebrate Cesar Chavez

A state grant will fund a community outreach effort based at UC Riverside, recognizing the life and work of the farmworkers' rights advocate Cesar Chavez.

The effort will include a variety of short- and long-term activities that reinforce Chavez' philosophy of service to others. Activities will include multicultural and fine arts programs for needy children and families, a celebration and concert series promoting nonviolence and several children's programs that teach nonviolent expression through art.

The project is spearheaded by the University/Eastside Community Collaborative (UECC) AmeriCorps project with the Office of Governmental and Community Relations at UCR. It is supported by a $17,632 grant from the California Commission on Improving Life Through Service, which awarded grants at Governor Gray Davis' recommendation, for efforts that celebrate Chavez. The state legislature recently declared Chavez' birthday, March 31, a state holiday.

The Riverside Unified School District and the UCR College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences also helped sponsor the UECC AmeriCorps project proposal.
