  • UCLA recently hosted the Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest as a kickoff to Black History month.

This year's contest required contestants to write a speech incorporating the values and teachings of Dr. King along with his quote: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Martha Mangahas, a second-year physiological science and Spanish student, won the 13th annual contest, which was co-sponsored by the Office of Residential Life and the Intercultural Programming Committee.

After a preliminary screening process, six finalists were invited to deliver their speeches to a six-judge panel, made up of faculty, staff and students on January 25. All participants received a certificate of recognition and "The Martin Luther King Companion." As the winner, Mangahas also received a commemorative plaque and an anthology of the completed works of Dr. King.
