  • UC Irvine's Division of Undergraduate Education has received a $113,000 federal grant to support the year-long testing of a new online grammar program called "Grammar From the Ground Up." The program will be tested at both UCI and Irvine Valley Community College.

According to Meredith Lee, dean of undergraduate education at UCI, the program promotes active student learning and writing, providing students online access to writing specialists who correct and comment on their work.

"By integrating online writing practice with feedback from writing specialists, this program encourages students to become fully engaged in developing strong writing abilities during their first years at UCI," said Lee.

The U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) supports innovative educational reform projects and is especially interested in promoting programs that can serve as national models for improving postsecondary education. The Grammar From the Ground Up program was one of 125 proposals funded by FIPSE this year from more than 2,000 applications.

    Library Books Go Online

UC Irvine recently implemented a pilot program, providing over 700 e-books online for students, faculty and staff. The primary goal of the program is to offer more texts to a greater number of readers.

Books and reference materials are offered in all fields and can be read from a desktop computer or a palm pilot. Prior to the new program, only excerpts from periodicals were available online. There are more non-fiction than fiction books and more new books than old ones, because it is easier to digitalize newer books than it is to digitalize older ones.

The program will run through the end of 2001, at which time it will be reassessed by both students and faculty, whose recommendations will be incorporated into future online offerings.
