UC San DiegoCampus Goes on a Green MissionBuilding on decades of research and innovation in geosciences and oceanography, UC San Diego's Green Campus Program integrates sustainability into course curricula, builds general campus awareness about environmental issues and implements projects targeting energy use. Students are actively engaged in this effort. The Biofuels Action and Awareness Network, a student group, has sponsored a project called Greenline, which will equip a campus shuttle bus to run on 100 percent biodiesel. These students and biologists are working with Scripps researchers to find algae that can be grown on a large scale on land that can't otherwise be used for crops. The UCSD campus will soon generate 10 to 15 percent of its annual electrical needs with alternative generating capacity. The University of California at San Diego also offers courses related to sustainability and the environment. For more information on these, visit The Greenest University Blog.
