Two UCI Students Chosen for Google Scholarships

Gabriela Marcu, an undergraduate Informatics major, has been selected as one of two winners of the Google 2008 Anita Borg Scholarship for women in computing. The second winner is Silvia Lindtner, an Informatics doctoral candidate. Each received a $10,000 award and attended the 2008 Google Scholars' Retreat in April.

Marcu is a member of the first class of Informatics majors in the Bren School of Information and Computer Science and has helped spread the word about the new program by forming the Informatics Student Association. She also is a member of the Women in Computer Science group at UCI and is active in community outreach efforts. Lindtner was part of a team at a Siemens Research lab that developed an interactive computer game called Fish 'n' Steps, which links a player's daily footstep count to the growth and activity of animated fish.
