Applications Top 100,000 as 96 Percent Apply Online for Fall 2005 Admission
The University of California received a record total of more than 100,000 applications for undergraduate admission for fall 2005. That number represents an increase of 0.9 percent over last year, from 99,234 to 100,138.
Prospective freshmen filed 76,152 applications, or 2.8 percent more than in 2004. Applications from within California rose by 3.7 percent, while out-of-state applications declined by 4.7 percent. Following a decline in fall 2004, international applications increased by 6.2 percent in 2005. Although the overall number of freshman applications to UC grew, the number of applications for spots at four campuses declined slightly.
UC received 23,986 transfer applications for fall 2005, down 2.7 percent from fall 2004. Out-of-state and international transfer applications dropped by 27.3 percent and 13.8 percent, respectively, while the number of transfer applications from California students fell 1.9 percent from fall 2004. Most campuses showed a slight decrease in transfer applications over last year, although the numbers for UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley rose by 2.6 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively.
Over the past two years, the number of freshman applications has decreased by 1 percent, while transfer applications have increased by 4 percent.
Merced Freshmen
In its first year of offering admission to freshmen, UC’s newest campus, the University of California at Merced, attracted nearly 8,000 freshman applicants — representing 10.5 percent of the systemwide freshman pool — and 889 transfer applicants, making up 3.7 percent of the transfer pool.
The campus attracted more than 7,700 California freshman applicants and nearly 800 California community college transfers from a diverse set of racial/ethnic backgrounds and geographic regions.
UC Merced Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey and other UC officials reported that they were pleased at student response to the new campus, which is expected to enroll about 1,000 students in its first year.
Online Applications Soar
A total of 96.1 percent of all applicants for fall 2005 applied online — an 11.5 percent jump from the fall 2004 numbers. More prospective freshmen (96.7 percent) than transfer applicants (93.9 percent) filed electronically. Online applicants applied to more campuses, on average, than did those who submitted paper applications (3.6 percent for online; 3.4 percent for paper). Freshmen from California had the highest percentage of online applicants (97.8 percent).
“We were delighted by the continued growth in the number of students filing their applications electronically as well as the proportional distribution of online applicants across all income ranges,” said UC Director of Admissions Susan Wilbur.
As a proportion of freshman applicants from California, underrepresented minorities increased from 22.7 percent last year to 23.7 percent for fall 2005. The largest increase in the number of underrepresented students compared with last year was among Chicano/Latinos, with 1,062 more applicants than in 2004 (9.6 percent).
