NAACP President Mfume Visits UCSC
NAACP
President and Chief Executive Officer Kweisi Mfume presented the
keynote speech at UC Santa Cruz's 17th annual Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Memorial Convocation on January 24.
Mfume, who has led the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People since 1996, spoke on "Reaffirming America's
Agenda," focusing on the presidential election and the legacy
of the U.S. civil rights movement.
As part of the event, approximately 300 middle school, high school
and community college students from the Santa Cruz area were hosted
for a pre-convocation reception and talk by UCSC professor and civil
rights activist Angela Davis. UCSC Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood also
addressed the students.
The Martin Luther King Jr.convocation celebrates the life of Dr.
King by presenting speakers on current civil rights issues. Sponsored
in part by the Office of the Chancellor, the event is planned every
year by a group of UCSC students, staff and faculty.
