New Earth and Planetary Sciences Department,
Majors
Recently, the Department
of Geology and Geophysics changed its name to the Department of Earth
and Planetary Science. Now the department has designed five new major
tracks to replace the old majors in Geology, Geophysics and Earth
Science.
All degrees will be awarded under the title Earth
and Planetary Science, with three revised programs in Geology, Geophysics
and Environmental Earth Science; and two new programs in Atmospheric
Science and Marine Science. The new major programs will be available
to new students in fall 2002.

UCB Offers Undergrad Math Teacher Credential Program
The shortage of qualified math and science teachers in California
has created new opportunities and support for students to pursue
teaching careers at UC Berkeley.
TeachMath, a newly expanded program funded by the UC Office of the
President, is a teacher credential program for UC undergraduates
(normally teacher credentialing programs in the UC system are only
open to graduates). TeachMath is open only to Berkeley math and
applied math majors. Students enter the program during their senior
year and continue into one graduate year.
TeachMath is an attractive option for students who want to be a
teacher but worry that they can't afford tuition. Through scholarship
programs such as Community Teaching Fellowships and Teacher Scholars,
students in TeachMath are eligible to receive up to $12,500 in stipends
and fee remissions. This is in addition to financial aid already
available to all students.
