Doorways Update Submission Site Opens

UC's high school course update submission website, Doorways, has opened for the 2008–09 academic year with improvements that should make the process of course submission go more smoothly.

The chief improvements to Doorways are new subject-specific course-description templates and a revised submission policy that allows schools to submit descriptions one at a time, as they are complete, rather than having to wait and submit all their courses at once.

The templates will help guide teachers and administrators in developing course descriptions that fully cover the content of courses submitted for "a-g" approval.

Complete course information enables reviewers to accurately judge whether a course meets UC requirements. The new templates can be used to submit a new course for approval, to resubmit a course for which we have asked for more information or to reinstate a course that was removed from the school's course list more than three years ago.

"By collecting more complete information from schools, we hope to make more timely decisions and reduce the number of times we have to ask for more information," said Susan Wilbur, UC director of undergraduate admissions.

After answering general questions about course title, textbooks used and grade levels, school administrators will be asked to provide specific details about the course, including the course outline, instructional approaches, key assignments and assessment methods.

In addition, each template requests the name and contact information of the course's teacher so that the teacher as well as the administrator submitting the course can be informed of UC's decision.

By allowing schools to submit courses at they are complete the University hopes to provide faster responses to schools.

Once a course description has been submitted, the University will e-mail an acknowledgment. All courses are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. The University encourages schools to submit courses early in the submission cycle so there is time for feedback and revisions. Schools that delay course submission until near the deadline run the risk of not having time for revisions before the Oct. 1 deadline. Only approved courses may be used to fulfill UC's "a-g" subject requirements.
