UC San DiegoCampus Embraces Virtual LearningTapping technology in multiple ways, UC San Diego is bringing learning to students from places far from home. For example, Derek Lomas teaches "Developing Technologies for Developing Economies" with various forms of Web-based technologies, including wiki sites, video streams and e-mail — all from his remote desktop in Mumbai, India. His students on the UCSD campus are a diverse group. Both undergraduate and graduate students, whose varied majors include Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Biotechnology and Art, are enrolled in the course. A virtual environment also brought more than 65,000 schoolchildren from around the world to UCSD to explore the yearly migration of gray whales with scientists aboard FLIP, the innovative research platform operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Through Ball State University's award-winning Electronic Field Trip program, students watched from their classrooms, toured the facility remotely and had real-time interaction with Scripps researchers. :: For more information, visit the department site. |
