Analytical Writing Placement Examination to be Held May 10

This year, the University of California will administer the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) on Saturday, May 10, to students who have been admitted to the University for fall 2008 and who, by April 1, had not satisfied the Entry-Level Writing Requirement by other means.

Students are not required to take the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination if they have a record on file with the University indicating achievement of acceptable scores on (1) the SAT Reasoning Test, (2) the ACT combined English/Writing test, (3) the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language or Literature examination, (4) the International Baccalaureate Higher Level or Standard Level English A examination, or (5) the SAT II: Writing Test.

The Analytical Writing Placement Exam booklet, "An Information Booklet for the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination," is available online at the AWPE website. The booklet explains the examination process and includes previous examinations that can be downloaded and used by students to strengthen their skills in reading comprehension and writing proficiency.

The Analytical Writing Placement Examination reports for fall 2007 are now available online. These reports indicate the number and percentage of students who satisfied the University's Entry-Level Writing Requirement prior to enrolling at the University of California in fall 2007. Data can be viewed by school, district and county.  It is intended that the data will provide useful feedback as school, district and/or county educators work with students to improve academic performance.
