Writing Placement Exam Set for May 13

The University's annual Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) is scheduled for Saturday, May 13, beginning at 9 a.m. at test centers throughout the state.

All students who will enroll this fall as freshmen directly from a California high school must take the examination, unless UC has received test scores by April 1 that indicate the student has already satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Test results that satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement include:

  • A score of 680 or higher on the SAT II: Writing Subject Test;
  • A score of 680 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test (Writing);
  • A score of 30 or higher on the ACT combined English/Writing test;
  • A score of 3 or higher on either Advanced Placement (AP) examination in English;
  • A score of 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Language A exam.

In early April, admitted freshmen who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement as noted above will receive an e-mail or letter directing them to an AWPE test center near their home. Students who receive a letter and believe they have satisfied the requirement should call AWPE Customer Service at (800) 839-8507.

Students can visit the Analytical Writing Placement Examination website (www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe) for information about the exam and requirement, including sample exams and scored essays.

Students must pay a nonrefundable fee of $65 to cover the costs of administering the test. Students may pay with a credit card at the AWPE website, or with a check or money order. Checks or money orders should be made payable to The Regents of the University of California and submitted by the date indicated in the postage-paid envelope provided.

Students who received admission application fee waivers will automatically have the fee waived for the AWPE. Results of the examination will be mailed to students in mid-June.

Other Ways to Satisfy the Requirement

Students may take the AWPE only once. Those who do not pass may satisfy the requirement before enrolling by earning an appropriate SAT II or AP test score, earning a grade of "C" or better in an acceptable college course in English composition or earning a score of 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English (Language A only). Those who do not satisfy the requirement before they enroll must earn a grade of “C” or better in a preparatory writing course at the UC campus they attend.

About the AWPE

The AWPE asks students to analyze or evaluate the views put forth in a 700- to 1,000-word prose passage. Satisfactory essays must demonstrate the student's ability to structure and develop an essay and use written English effectively. Students are expected to provide reasoned, concrete and developed presentations of their points of view. They may support these views by any means appropriate to the task, but they must demonstrate their understanding of the passage and lead readers to understand their points of view.

Printable examples of previous examinations and scored student essays with comments are available online.

Counselors are urged to use the information provided online to help students understand the purpose of the requirement — which is to get them the best possible start toward success in their University careers. Students should also understand that examination results do not affect their admission status.

Examinations are evaluated by writing faculty. The University Committee on Preparatory Education, is the UC Academic Senate committee responsible for the AWPE requirement, sets standards for passing the examination.
