First Steps Taken in Search for New UC President

The University has formed a special advisory committee to consider the selection of a replacement for UC President Robert C. Dynes, who is resigning. Following UC policy, the committee will include several regents, the president of the systemwide Alumni Associations of UC and the student regent, as well as the governor, and the current and former chairmen of the board.

The members of the advisory committee are: Regents' Chairman Richard C. Blum, who will serve as the committee's chair; Regent Sherry L. Lansing, who will serve as the vice chair of the committee; Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger; Benjamin Allen, 2007–08 student regent; Eleanor Brewer, AAUC president and alumni regent; and Regents Russell S. Gould, Eddie Island, John J. Moores, Gerald L. Parsky (former board chair), Norman J. Pattiz and Leslie Tang Schilling. The committee will consult with representatives from all 10 UC campuses, including advisory committees of faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Dynes, who is 64, announced in August his intention to leave his post by June 2008. A first-generation college graduate and renowned physicist, Dynes began his term in October 2003, and will end it at the nearly five-year mark he had initially set for himself for serving as head of the 10-campus system. The decision, he said, paves the way for him to focus on his personal life, including a new marriage, and his continuing research into superconductivity, a passion the internationally recognized physicist continued to pursue even throughout his presidency.

During the search, Provost and Executive Vice President Wyatt R. Hume will act as the University's chief operating officer, in addition to his other academic and health affairs duties.
