New Ways to Satisfy IGETC Area 6A Adopted

The University has instituted two new ways to satisfy the requirements of Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) area 6A, Language Other Than English (LOTE).

Under IGETC, prospective UC transfer students attending California community colleges complete a series of courses that satisfy the lower-division breadth/general education requirements at the University. UC has developed an agreement with each California community college specifying which of its courses may be applied to each IGETC category. Under area 6A of IGETC, students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English equivalent to two years of high school instruction in the same language.

The University recently determined that a passing grade on the international A level and O level exams demonstrates a student's proficiency in a language other than English, and can be used to clear this Subject Area Requirement of IGETC.

UC also has determined that if an appropriate achievement test is not available to assert a student's proficiency, a faculty member associated with a California community college can verify competency. Such verification requires that the college provide a document on letterhead asserting that the student's proficiency in the language is equivalent to two years of high school study.

Additional information on ways to clear the Language Other Than English requirement may be found at the IGETC page.
