Emergency System Helped Keep Students Informed During Fires

The campus's new emergency messaging system had its first real-life run during the wildfires that swept San Diego County in October. Text messages were sent that kept nearly 11,000 people informed during the fires while the campus shut down for a week.

Though the fires never threatened the campus itself, thousands of faculty and staff members were swept up in the wave of evacuations that saw nearly 500,000 area residents on the move.

Students were encouraged to stay indoors because of the poor air quality but could take yoga classes and stress management workshops, or play Ping-Pong and pool.

Housing and Dining Services made sure that one dining facility stayed open at each undergraduate college for the approximately 5,400 students remaining on campus, and resident advisers kept them updated by holding meetings and posting fliers.
