RiversideCopernicus Project Gives Students Classroom Experience
High school students who participated in UCR's Science Summer Institute got their first taste of classroom teaching experience this past fall as they taught fourth-graders a lesson in electric circuits. SSI is part of UCR’s Copernicus Project, a program launched by an $11.5 million grant to fund initiatives and programs to identify and recruit future science teachers. In 2007, 23 high school students from seven Inland Empire schools were selected by their science teachers to participate in the program. During a one-week summer course, students are shown methods and strategies to teach science and math. Coursework includes the preparation of a lesson plan and then the execution of that plan for elementary school students. :: For more information on the Science Summer Institute, see the Copernicus Project website.
