High School Counselors Overview

Regrettably, the Governor’s proposed 2004-05 budget eliminates funding for DAP and we have discontinued the program for the foreseeable future.

Although DAP will no longer be an option for high school students considering a UC education, we are committed to serving those students who applied to UC for admission to DAP during the fall 2004 application cycle. These applicants will be receiving offers of guaranteed, deferred enrollment from one or more UC campuses via the Guaranteed Transfer Option (GTO). Students who choose to accept a GTO offer will be provided with an academic contract, describing the courses that must be completed and the grades that must be earned to successfully transfer from the community college to UC. In addition, these students will have access to UC advising services to guide their academic progress. The admission letter these students receive will direct them to a web site that provides detailed information and personal contacts for questions.

The Governor has proposed that UC applicants who accept an offer of deferred enrollment will have their community college fees waived by the state; this proposed fee waiver is subject to final legislative approval.

UC fully appreciates the significance of this change and understands that you will be asked to respond to many questions from students and families. To assist you, UC has developed a set of web-based resources that provide a detailed description of the admissions process and timeline and a set of anticipated questions and answers counselors can use when explaining this change to students, families, faculty and other administrators. We will also provide counselors with the relevant text that will appear in the admission offer letters being sent to these students, and a listing of deferred students as soon as it is available.

While the California education community is facing unprecedented challenges, the strength of our partnership will enable us to meet the needs of students, who remain at the forefront of our concerns.
