Program Overview

DAP – the Dual Admissions Program – was a new path to UC admission for promising high school students who ranked near the top of their class but had not met all of the requirements to attend UC directly from high school.

Under DAP, California high school students who fell between the top 4 percent and 12.5 percent of their high school graduating class were invited to apply to UC in their senior year and, once admitted, were guaranteed a place at a specific UC campus as a transfer student, provided they complete their lower division coursework at a California community college.

The Governor’s proposed 2004-05 budget eliminates funding for DAP; however, students who applied to DAP during November 2003 will be offered UC admission via the Guaranteed Transfer Option (GTO) process. In addition, the Governor has proposed that all UC applicants (i.e., DAP and freshman) who receive and accept an offer of deferred enrollment will have their community college fees waived by the State. The first round of participating students will enter a California community college in fall 2004. This means that the first GTO students will transfer to UC in fall 2006. (Two years is likely to be the shortest amount of time in which GTO students could complete their community college requirements, but they have up to four years to do so.)

DAP will no longer be an option for high school students considering a UC education; however, UC campuses offer a variety of programs in support of transfer admission, particularly for community college students. Under some programs, students at certain community colleges are guaranteed admission to a UC campus if they meet specific requirements. Other programs provide extensive academic and admission support services to transfer applicants, but do not guarantee admission.
