UCLA GRADUATE STUDENT NOMINATED AS 2004-05 STUDENT REGENT

Jodi Lynette Anderson, a second-year doctoral student in education at UCLA, has been nominated as the student member of the University of California Board of Regents for 2004-05.
Anderson’s nomination will be considered by the full board at its Sept. 17-18 meeting. If approved, Anderson will become the student regent-designate and be able to participate in all deliberations, but not vote until July 2004 when her one-year term begins.

“I look forward to serving as a student regent during this period of academic and fiscal challenges,” said Anderson, a first-generation college student from Fresno. “In meeting these challenges, UC must maintain its commitment to provide access to a quality education for all current and future students.”

Anderson is currently a graduate student researcher at the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute and a teaching assistant in the UCLA education department. She completed her undergraduate studies in psychology at UC Santa Barbara in 1994. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in social policy and administration at the University of Nottingham, England, and a master’s in education at UCLA.

She is the recipient of several academic accolades, including the 2002 UCLA Women for Change Award and the UCSB Chancellor’s University Service Award.

Anderson brings a wealth of campus experience to the position. Before pursuing her graduate degree, she served as an assistant director of orientation programs, a special programs coordinator, an admissions counselor and an office manager of the campus activities center at UCSB. Anderson also worked as a teaching assistant in interdisciplinary studies at UCSB.

The current student regent is Dexter Ligot-Gordon, a UC Berkeley political economy major. He will be succeeded by Matthew J. Murray, a UC Berkeley undergraduate studying architecture, whose term as student regent begins July 2003.

The nominating committee included Regents Peter Preuss, Odessa Johnson, Judy Hopkinson, Dexter Ligot-Gordon, Joanne Kozberg and Ward Connerly, with President Richard C. Atkinson, Governor Gray Davis and Regents Chairman John Moores as ex officio members.

If approved, Anderson will be the 30th student regent since the position was established in 1975.
