SUSAN WILBUR NAMED AS NEW ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR AT UC

Susan A. Wilbur has been named director of undergraduate admissions for the University of California system.

Wilbur, currently director of admissions and relations with schools at UC Irvine, has run an exemplary admissions program at the campus during a time of substantial growth and increasing selectivity.

During her tenure at UC Irvine, the total number of freshman and community college transfer applications increased from 19,758 to 37,288.

Wilbur will assume her new position in January and be based at the UC Office of the President in Oakland.

"Susan Wilbur has a deep knowledge of undergraduate admissions and will provide wise leadership in this crucial role," said C. Judson King, UC provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

Wilbur will lead a busy office that oversees undergraduate admissions for the 10-campus UC system. Since 1997, undergraduate applications to the University of California have increased by 32 percent to 95,014.

"I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to help guide UC's admissions on a systemwide level," said Wilbur, who earned her undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Southern California and a doctorate in higher education from UCLA.

Early in her career, Wilbur worked as an admissions recruiter at USC and Marymount Palos Verdes College. She joined UC Irvine as a school relations officer in 1979.

Wilbur became director of admissions at UC Irvine in 1993, working with faculty, students and administrators to meet UCI's enrollment goals and providing direction as the campus moved into the selective admissions arena in 1996. She advocated for the expanded use of technology and has served as a member of the College Board’s SAT committee.

Wilbur has authored a number of reports on improving admission decisions, on writing personal statements and on facilitating community college transfers to UC.

Wilbur succeeds Carla M. Ferri, who recently retired after more than a decade as director of undergraduate admissions at the University of California system.
