UC, Citing Safety Concerns, Puts India Education Abroad Program on Hold

In view of the military buildup and the threat of war breaking out between India and Pakistan, and with the personal safety of its students as its primary concern, the University of California announced today that it is placing its Fall 2002 Education Abroad Program (EAP) in India on hold, pending a later re-evaluation of the security situation in the region.

The Education Abroad program in India may be reinstated for the Fall 2002 term if there are adequate improvements in the security situation.

This decision was made in close consultation with the U.S. State Department, which issues travel warnings for American citizens overseas. The State Department has called on U.S. citizens traveling in India to return to the United States due to the escalating hostilities along the border between India and Pakistan.

UC, along with the State Department, will continue to monitor conditions in India closely.

UC’s decision impacts 15 students currently scheduled to travel to India later this summer for study. No UC EAP students are currently studying in India.

UC has two EAP sites in India, at Delhi and Hyderabad. UC will leave in place its infrastructure and staff in India to prepare for the eventual return of UC students.

Such actions are not without precedent: In recent years, the University temporarily halted its Education Abroad activities in China following the Tiananmen Square uprisings, in the Middle East during the Gulf War, and in Indonesia during the 1999 civil unrest. Most recently, the University suspended its Israel program this term because of safety considerations.
