REGENT STEPHEN NAKASHIMA RESIGNS FROM UC BOARD OF REGENTS
Chairman
S. Sue Johnson today announced the resignation of S. Stephen Nakashima
as a member of the University of California Board of Regents, effective
immediately.
"Stephen
Nakashima has been a dedicated representative of the people and
university of California," said Johnson. "The entire UC
community is extremely grateful for his many years of devoted service,
and we wish him well."
A San
Jose attorney, Nakashima, 79, earned his bachelor's degree in accounting
at UC Berkeley and his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law.
He was first appointed to the board by then-Gov. George Deukmejian
in 1989 to fill an unexpired term, and reappointed by then-Gov.
Pete Wilson in 1992 to a term expiring in 2004. At the time of his
resignation, he served on the regents' educational policy and investments
committees and on the Special Committee on UC Merced.
Nakashima
cited the loss of his wife of 52 years, Sally, who died July 7,
1999, and a stroke he suffered eight months ago as reasons for his
resignation.
The
board consists of 26 members, including 18 regents who are appointed
by the governor for 12-year terms. More than 400 individuals have
served on the Board of Regents since the university was founded
in 1868. For more information about the regents: www.ucop.edu/regents.
