Berkeley Undergraduate Nominated to 2002-03 UC Student Regent Post

Dexter G. Ligot-Gordon, a junior majoring in political economy of industrial societies at UC Berkeley, has been nominated as the 2002-03 student member of the University of California Board of Regents.

Ligot-Gordon's nomination, recommended by the regents' Special Committee to Select a Student Regent, will be considered by the full board at its Sept. 12-13 meeting. If approved, he will become student regent-designate and be able to participate in all deliberations but not vote until July 2002, when his one-year term as student regent begins.
"I have always been dedicated to the concerns of my community, especially the youth," Ligot-Gordon said.

The current student regent, Justin Fong, also pursued his undergraduate degree at the Berkeley campus and is now a UCLA public policy graduate student. Fong will be succeeded by fellow UCLA graduate student Tracy M. Davis, whose student-regent term begins July 1, 2001.

Ligot-Gordon serves on the UC Berkeley Committee on Admissions, Enrollment and Preparatory Education, which develops recommendations for the improving the campus's admissions policies and review process. He also works as a Web designer with the Statewide Database, a project funded by the California Legislature to house its redistricting data set.

A 21-year-old Vallejo native, Ligot-Gordon has been active in a number of Bay Area community and youth programs. As a leadership coach for Project Pull, he mentored high school students. Ligot-Gordon also worked as a youth director for Global Doors International and as a program assistant for the East Bay Asian Youth Center, focusing on writing and effective learning strategies. He was previously chair and founder of the Pilipino Youth Coalition and a youth conference coordinator for Filipino American Social Services in Vallejo.

For his efforts, he was honored by both the California Assembly and Senate with certificates of recognition for community involvement in 1999.

If approved, Ligot-Gordon will be the 28th student regent since the position was established in 1975.

Under the California Constitution, the University of California is governed by a Board of Regents.
