The following statement was issued today in reference to the wildfire in Northern New Mexico.  The University of California manages the Los Alamos National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Richard C. Atkinson
University of California

"The fire affecting Los Alamos and neighboring communities is of grave concern to the University of California.  We are in close communication with lab management on the status of this disaster, the welfare of Los Alamos Laboratory employees and their families, and the protection of laboratory property and facilities.  To our many colleagues, friends, and everyone in Northern New Mexico, I extend the support and sympathy of the entire University of California community.  Our thoughts are with you, UC representatives are on the scene, and we are working to identify every possible way for the university to help during this time of need and in the recovery process.

"We are grateful for the concern and efforts of Secretary Richardson and the Department of Energy as a whole, Senators Domenici and Bingaman and other members of the New Mexico Congressional delegation, and the state and federal agencies engaged in responding to this crisis.  We look forward to working with them now and in the future.  I also thank and commend the many dedicated laboratory staff members who have been working around the clock to fight the fire, help area residents, keep the laboratory safe and secure, and provide information to the media and the public."
