FOURTEEN UC FACULTY ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

"Election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences is one of the highest honors a scientist may receive," Atkinson said.

"This year's results are another confirmation of the continuing high accomplishment of the university's faculty," Atkinson added.  The total number of UC faculty holding membership in the NAS now totals 299.

The new NAS members were selected "in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research," the academy said in its announcement.

Following is a list of the new NAS members from UC and their campus affiliation:

UC Berkeley

• Elwyn R. Berklekamp, professor of mathematics.
• Kenneth W. Wachter, chairman of demography and professor of demography and statistics.
• William J. Welch, professor of electrical engineering and of astronomy.
• Richard J. Saykally, professor of chemistry.
• Vaughan F.R. Jones, professor of mathematics.
• Steven E. Lindow, professor of plant and microbial biology.

UC Davis

• Bruce D. Hammock, professor of entomology.

UC Irvine

• Brian Skyrms, professor of philosophy.

UCLA

• Louis J. Ignarro, professor of pharmacology.
• Margaret G. Kivelson, professor of earth and space sciences and professor of geophysics and space physics
• Michael E. Phelps, associate director of the Laboratory of Structural Biology and professor and chair of molecular and medical pharmacology.

UC San Diego

• Richard S. Hamilton, professor of mathematics.

UC San Francisco

• James E. Cleaver, professor of radiology.
• Michael M. Merzenich, professor of otolaryngology.
