Transfer Success for Biology Major

Before switching to sciences, Stephanie Nale was an anthropology major at Skyline College. The transition was rough, but she joined MESA and began to excel.

“When I first changed my major, I felt unprepared for the rigorous quantitative nature of my classes, especially in higher math, “she said. “MESA gave me a place to study, interact with students sharing similar goals and to thrive in my classes.”

Nale transferred to UC Santa Cruz last semester after winning the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Award. The award was established by Pister, the former UCSC chancellor and MESA champion, to support talented community college students who want to transfer there.

Nale said the support she received from MESA while at Skyline was instrumental in her being awarded the $20,000 scholarship.

“I am very grateful for the MESA center at Skyline College, and the role it and the participating staff and students played in my success.”
