Lesher Foundation funds new center

MESA was recently awarded significant new funding from the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation to support a new program in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Lesher Foundation has committed $225,000 over three years to develop a MESA pre-college center in Contra Costa County as a matching grant for the AT&T Foundation campaign to establish MESA Schools Programs (MSP) to un-served areas (See “AT&T awards $1.5 million to MESA,” MESA Connect, Vol. 28, No. 4, Fall 2006/Winter 2007).

The Lesher and AT&T grants provide for a range of services to encourage and support students interested in math-based fields, especially engineering and computer science. The services will include the MESA Day Academy, a series of hands-on training and student competitions to build projects that demonstrate the theory and practical applications of math and science; study skills training; career and college exploration; parent and student leadership training; and other components.

“These new funds will enable us to reach students who otherwise would not be exposed to math-based fields. MESA can support them and motivate them to achieve academically,” says Juanita Muñiz-Torres, Statewide MESA Programs Director.
