Two Bay Area community colleges now have MESA centers on the campuses. City College of San Francisco and Los Medanos College in Pittsburg will begin serving MESA students this fall.
MESA now serves 3200 students at 33 community college centers throughout the state. MESA provides the resources and support necessary for successful transfers to four-year institutions with math-based majors.
The centers will not receive state funding but both schools sought and found other funding sources.
Frederick Moore was named the MESA director at CCSF and Carol Hernandez was named MESA director at Los Medanos.
Gil Rodriguez, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Los Medanos said he wanted a MESA center on campus to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students majoring in math, science and engineering.
"Motivating, creating confidence and strong learning skills and demystifying math and science are some challenges for math-based students, so we are betting on MESA to attract more students into these fields," he said.
