RE: Report for LAUC Fall Assembly December 6, 2002

DT: November 7, 2002

I attended the SLASIAC meeting as LAUC representative on October 29, 2002 at UC Irvine. Because this was the first meeting for several of members of the committee, including myself, the bulk of the meeting was given to background reports about the history and work of the committee so far, and discussions with no conclusions about the issues facing libraries now and in the near future.

SLASIAC issues discussed at this meeting that are of particular interest to LAUC members include:

  1. Transition of many resources to electronic only
  2. Assessing and managing redundant collections (e.g. Government Documents)
  3. New metrics needed to reflect shared ownership
  4. The changing roles of the RLF's
  5. Collections Management Initiative - analysis and application of results
  6. Scholarly Information Program Task Force Report - to include vision, goals and strategies to inform future budgeting processes.
