April 29, 2002 TO: Deborah Murphy, LAUC President FROM: Lucia Snowhill, LAUC Representative, UC Resource Sharing Committee RE: UC Resource Sharing Committee Report, Spring Assembly 2002 The Resource Sharing Committee (RSC) has held one conference call and one face to face meeting, and has discussed a number of issues via e-mail since Fall Assembly. Since Fall Assembly, the following activities and issued have been addressed: Consortial Borrowing System Fretwell Downing's VDX system was selected for the consortial borrowing system, and implementation plans have begun. CDL and libraries have been working through hardware and software issues and configurations. The first two campuses (UCLA and UCSD) are testing the new consortial borrowing system as a pilot phase; other UC libraries will follow in the next implementation phase, projected to begin the end of May. Campus ILL personnel are being trained on the system this spring. Desktop Delivery (DTD) Desktop delivery as an option for CDL Request items has just been implemented in late April by a couple of campuses that have technical issues resolved, and will be implemented by other campuses as they are able. Request screens have been edited and revised to show the option for desktop delivery. Policies and procedures for implementing DTD were reviewed and adopted by RSC. Other issues RSC has reviewed ILL loan periods, and has recommended postponing consideration of any changes until the consortial borrowing system is implemented. RSC has reviewed and responded to SOPAG with comments on several system-wide reports: Digital Preservation Advisory Committee Report, Access Integration Task Force Report, Digital Reference Task Force White Paper, and the Privacy Task Force Report. Other projects and issue that RSC is working on include: implementation of the Request feature in the new Melvyl catalog; conducting a survey to gather data about the potential for loaning special collections materials through CDL Request; planning for a Circulation Advisory Group best practices workshop; investigating methods of improving access to materials at the storage facilities; reviewing external user policies.
