RE: UC Resource Sharing Committee Report, Fall Assembly 2002

The Resource Sharing Committee (RSC) has held one conference call and had one face-to-face meeting since Spring Assembly. The following summarizes the activities and issues have been addressed in the last several months. The committee now has a web site (http://sshl.ucsd.edu/ucrsc/), where minutes, reports, and goals and objectives can be reviewed in further detail.

The majority of the work of the committee continues issue areas and projects already underway in the previous fiscal year:

Consortial Borrowing System:
Implementation of a systemwide consortial borrowing system remains a high priority. Fretwell-Downing's VDX software will be used to implement the consortial borrowing system. Three campuses (LA, SD, and SB) began testing the system this summer, and logistics, equipment and software issues are still being resolved.

Desktop Delivery of ILL requests:
Most campuses are now participating in desktop delivery of materials for ILL using local systems. This service will be integrated into a system-wide plan when VDX software issues are resolved.

Pilot Project on REQUEST of Special Collection materials:
A pilot project was conducted to allow loan of special collections materials via CDL Request. RSC is evaluating data from the pilot and conducting a further qualitative survey to gather further information before finalizing recommendations on the project.

Blocking UC individuals at the home campus:
A Circulation Advisory Group (CAG) subcommittee has been drafting recommendations for blocking individuals at their home campus who abuse circulation privileges at other UC campuses. Their recommendations are under review by SOPAG.

Other projects and objectives:
RSC is continually reviewing methods and procedures to improve delivery of information between campuses, and that discussion ranges from the practical matters of reviewing the Tricor contracts for moving materials between campuses, reviewing and upgrading equipment, such as Minolta scanners, to looking at technologies to provide digital images for microformats. With the migration of databases to the new MELVYL, the committee looks toward continued review of policies and practices. In addition to implementation of the VDX consortial borrowing systems, goals for this year include reviewing and making recommendation on ILL loan periods, external user policies, circulation best practices, and improvement of access to materials in the storage facilities.

Goals and objectives for 2002/2003 have been reviewed and updated, and approved by SOPAG.
