The Heads of Public Services (HOPS) met on March 8th in Oakland. A major portion of the meeting was spent discussing the future of HOPS and its role as an advisory group to SOPAG. As stated in the meeting minutes, "There was consensus that HOPS' future efforts should focus on its role as a forum for in-depth discussion of major public services issues affecting the UC libraries and its role as an agent for advancing the understanding of, and progress on, those same issues." Several of these issues included 24x7 reference services, information literacy, and the evaluation of public services. Following the discussion of HOPS role, Isabel Stirling volunteered to become the next HOPS Chair. Additionally George Bynon agreed to be the recorder and an Agenda Committee was created consisting of Cheryl Gomez, Marilyn Moody, and Laine Farley. In response to SOPAG's feedback on the report of the Digital Reference Task Force, a charge will be drafted to create a Digital Reference Services Group that will serve as a Common Interest Group reporting through HOPS with representatives from all UC campuses and the CDL. After discussing Steve Toub's summary regarding his recent visits with UC campus Web teams, HOPS recognized the value of this informal collaboration and will urge the group to continue this collaboration. On another topic, it was decided that it is valuable for the UC community to continue to include non-UC holdings in Melvyl-T. More details about these and other topics discussed at the HOPS meeting are available at the following URL: http://www.slp.ucop.edu/sopag/hopsmin030802.html Submitted by Catherine Soehner, LAUC Representative to HOPS.
