General Update on LAUC's Statewide Activities

April 2005

Key Issues at a Glance:

------------------------------------

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON INSTRUCTIONAL ROLES

The Executive Board has endorsed the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee to study the growing teaching workload librarians now face. At the Board's suggestion, I also discussed this idea with the University Librarians, at their February 2005 meeting. This was a "grassroots" issue that rose from the San Diego division. Changes in how lecturers perform their work have had an unexpected outcome for librarians, as Kari Lucas (SD) pointed out in her opinion piece (http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/opinions/evolve.html). I'm
very pleased to note that this Ad Hoc Committee is chaired by Kari Lucas, and that UCSB University Librarian Sarah Pritchard will be a consultative
member of the working group. Esther Grassian (LA) and Pat Hawthorne, Director of Library Human Resources at UCLA, are also members of the Ad Hoc Committee. LAUC has formulated the charge for this group in close cooperation with the University Librarians, and I am sure we can expect a very interesting report that will indicate some of the major trends in librarian instructional activity.

E-JOURNAL TASK FORCE

The Ad Hoc Committee on Open Access, Electronic Journal Feasibility will finish its work soon, and this issue, together with the Bylaws, will be key items for discussion at the Spring Assembly. I will circulate their report as soon as I receive it, and I hope that divisions will have a chance to discuss it before June. This concept was also grassroots in nature, rising from the Davis division.

SLASIAC "STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS" FEEDBACK

I hope to have a packet of comments from LAUC ready to send to the Office of Systemwide Library Planning and the University Librarians by the end of the week, and I ask Ilan to post that document on the LAUC Web once that's been done.

WEB OPINIONS

The Guest Opinion feature of our Web site has attracted some incisive articles since it was begun. If you are thinking of writing an opinion, please jump in! It is noteworthy that the SOPAG HOPS Information Literacy Common Interest Group has linked its Web site to Esther Grassian's opinion (which may become an article in the future, she has said).

SPRING ASSEMBLY: JUNE 2

The Spring Assembly will be held at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, June 2, 2005. All LAUC members are welcome to attend. More info is available at the conference web site.

FOLLOWUP ON PAST ACTIVITY

The Committee on Committees, Rules and Jurisdiction (CCRF) is working on the LAUC bylaws, as outlined by the charge they were given. Their initial findings are due on April 15. After that point, LAUC divisions, the Board and Assembly Delegates will be able to discuss their conclusions and any potential draft changes they propose. The Spring Assembly will provide the main statewide venue for a dialogue on the bylaws. This is an exciting opportunity for LAUC to reposition itself to be more agile, as much as the University's strategic planning community has done, while firmly holding onto its historical roles in professional governance and advisory activity.

POSITION PAPER REVIEW TASK FORCE UPDATE

At the same time, the 2004 final recommendations of the LAUC Position Paper Review Task Force will be voted upon at the Spring Assembly. In order to facilitate both bylaws and Position Paper dialogue, and thus maximize the quality of our in-person time, the Spring Delegates will begin discussion online and ahead of the event. Divisional chairs may be in touch with you to solicit input. These steps should reduce the time spent on last minute textual revisions, and improve the scope of our deliberations at Santa Barbara.

TWO TRAVEL GRANTS TO SPRING ASSEMBLY

In keeping with our efforts to make the assemblies more accessible, I will fund two travel grants to Santa Barbara for librarians interested in attending. To be considered please send me an expression of interesta brief email statement is all that's required. The grant will cover airfare (must be made via the UCLA Travel Service), local connections and lunch. Please send your expression of interest directly to me by April 30, 2005. I will send reminders separately.

Best Regards, Terry Huwe
