LAUC is soliciting volunteers to serve as representatives to four important systemwide advisory groups.
May 9, 2005
FROM: Terry Huwe, 2004-2005 LAUC President
LAUC is soliciting volunteers to serve as representatives to four important systemwide advisory groups. The strategically important Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Advisory Committee (SLASIAC) is seeking a new LAUC member, and there are also opportunities to serve on three All Campus Advisory Groups: Heads of Technical Services (HOTS), Library Privacy Liaisons (LPL), and the Resource Sharing Committee (RSC). These three groups report to the Systemwide Operations and Planning Group (SOPAG), and are involved in important, focused activities in support of SOPAG’s overall charge.
LAUC Representative positions offer a wonderful opportunity to represent your fellow LAUC members, and are tremendously valuable for personal professional growth. SLASAIC and the All Campus Groups are involved in the major policy issues facing the UC Libraries; the perspectives of LAUC members have been of great assistance for these advisory bodies, whose work has gained importance within the life of the University. Travel to meetings of the advisory groups is supported by LAUC statewide funds. SLASIAC carries a three year term, while the All Campus Groups carry two year terms.
Application Process
Please submit all applications to your local LAUC Division chair. The application consists of a statement of interest in the position and your relevant background. Attach a resume if desired. All applications are shared with the statewide Executive Board.
Important: Please submit all applications by Friday, June 24th.
In consultation with the LAUC Executive Board, I will develop a list of three candidates for each position that we will submit to the Provost (for SLASIAC) and to the Chair of SOPAG in the case of the All Campus Groups. The Provost and the SOPAG Chair will make the final selection, looking at the overall composition of each group.
Here are descriptions of the four positions opening up this year:
Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Advisory Committee (SLASIAC)
The Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Committee was established to advise the University on systemwide library policies and strategic priorities, on systemwide long term planning for the UC libraries including the nine campus libraries and the California Digital Library (CDL), and on strategies to enhance and facilitate the transmission of scholarly and scientific communication in a digital environment. In pursuing this charge, the Committee provides essential guidance to the University as it seeks to:
Qualifications and responsibilities: SLASIAC’s work involves cutting-edge analysis and planning, and its recommendations are enormously important to the University and its libraries. A seasoned professional who understands and supports the mission of LAUC, and has good written oral communication skills is needed. Management experience is not required. This appointment is for a three year term, beginning on September 1, 2005 .

Heads of Technical Services (HOTS):
The Heads of Technical Services (HOTS) provide expertise and leadership to SOPAG on emerging technical services issues, coordinate systemwide technical services activities related to MELVYL and the CDL, and serve as a discussion group among the members on technical services issues and innovations. The committee also serves as a resource and focus for information exchange on technical services issues for the University of California . HOTS communicates with and disseminates to all campus groups, SOPAG, appointed task forces, and other common interest groups information on technical services issues. This appointment is for a two year term beginning in Fall 2005.

Library Privacy Liaisons (LPL)
The Library Privacy Liaisons (LPL) have the overall responsibility for addressing privacy issues as they relate to the University of California Libraries . This responsibility includes keeping abreast of the legal and policy developments in Federal and State law, the policies of the American Library Association, and relevant University of California policies and practices, and, on the basis of these developments, recommend library policies as needed to protect the privacy rights of library patrons and to keep staff and patrons informed of these rights.
One member from each campus and the CDL should be designated as Privacy Liaison by the University Librarian to serve on LPL. The Privacy Liaison will be responsible for overseeing the campus privacy policies and compliance with same. This individual should keep up with the ever-changing privacy environment as it affects libraries and library records, and keep campus staff informed about privacy issues. The LPL is an all campus group reporting to SOPAG. This appointment is for a two year term beginning in Fall 2005.

Resource Sharing Committee (RSC)
RSC Identifies and discusses policy issues and recommends best practices that facilitate resource sharing among campuses, analyzes barriers to expeditious sharing of materials and recommends solutions to remove these barriers. This may include identifying new methods of resource sharing, consideration of local circulation policies that affect resource sharing and facilitating movement of materials among the campuses. RSC coordinates communication on UC resource sharing issues with interlibrary services, circulation, collection development, special collections, technical services, and other groups as appropriate. The committee also coordinates collection, organization of and systemwide reporting of UC ILL/Resource Sharing statistics. This appointment is for a two year term beginning in Fall 2005.

From Jennifer Reiswig, RP&D Chair: "Because of the larger number of campuses which are closing their libraries for the holidays, I realize that many of you may not have access to your computers or files over the holiday. It therefore seems appropriate to move back the deadline by one week. Proposals are now due to your divisional Research committee by January 10, 2005. If your division has already scheduled a research & professional development committee meeting to review proposals, they may send out a local message asking you to keep to the January 3 deadline if possible. ", See 2004-2005 LAUC Research Grant Proposal Call and Calendar for details.
