Thank you for agreeing to serve on the Committee on Research and Professional Development This year, the overall goal for the committees is to complete work that is in progress and to determine the need for further action.

The Vice-President/President Elect of LAUC serves as chair of this committee. The 2000-2001 Call for Proposals and Calendar was sent to the Executive Board for distribution to the membership on September 29, 2000. Both documents are available on the LAUC web page at http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/research.html . The Research section of the LAUC web page also contains information about the LAUC Research Projects funded from 1980-2000 with an indication of the status of the project. It appears that the project status information has been updated inconsistently. Committee members should decide if they want to determine the status of all projects or not.

Last year, the Committee discussed ways in which they could assist LAUC members to submit high quality research proposals. They also discussed ways in which to make the results of the research projects more widely available. Please continue to investigate and implement procedures and practices that will achieve these ends.

As specified in the Bylaws (Article VIII, Section 1.J.3) the standing charge to the Research and Professional Development Committee is as follows:

a) Serve as the review body for research proposals submitted to the University-wide Research Grants for Librarians Program by LAUC members and recommend funding of proposals to the Office of the President.

b) Develop, monitor, and revise, as needed, procedures for carrying out the review of research proposals.

c) Develop guidelines for application to the University-wide Research Grants for Librarians Program and recommend revisions as needed.

d) Advise the President and the Executive Board on issues related to research and professional development for librarians and address other subjects at the request of the President.
