Thank you very much for agreeing to serve on the Committee on Research and Professional Development. LAUC committee work is key to our success in our role in advising the University on professional and governance matters of concern to all librarians. Your work is meaningful, valued and absolutely essential. The work of this committee has enabled LAUC to aid many colleagues in their research and professional activities.

This year, the overall goal for the committees is to complete work that is in progress and to determine the need for further action.

The Vice-President/President Elect of LAUC serves as chair of this committee. The 2001-2002 Call for Proposals and Calendar was sent to the Executive Board for distribution to the membership on October 3, 2001. Both documents are available on the LAUC web page at http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/research.html. The Research section of the LAUC web page also contains information about the LAUC Research Projects funded from 1980-2000 with an indication of the status of the project. It appears that the project status information has been updated inconsistently. Committee members should decide if they want to determine the status of all projects or not.

Last year, the Committee discussed ways in which they could assist LAUC members to submit high quality research proposals. To that end, the committee revised their call to allow applicants to submit their proposals electronically. The committee also made last year's successful grant applications available full text from their committee web site. Please continue to investigate and implement procedures and practices that will continue to achieve these ends.

Finally, I would also like the committee to have the LAUC Web Manager (Andrea Duda) place their final report as well as any other pertinent documents on the on Professional Governance web page on the LAUC systemwide web site.

As specified in the Bylaws (Article VIII, Section 1.J.3) the standing charge to the Research and Professional Development Committee is as follows:

a) Serve as the review body for research proposals submitted to the University-wide Research Grants for Librarians Program by LAUC members and recommend funding of proposals to the Office of the President.

b) Develop, monitor, and revise, as needed, procedures for carrying out the review of research proposals.

c) Develop guidelines for application to the University-wide Research Grants for Librarians Program and recommend revisions as needed.

d) Advise the President and the Executive Board on issues related to research and professional development for librarians and address other subjects at the request of the President.

The Committee's recommendations may be submitted to the LAUC Executive Board for review at any of the scheduled meetings. You will present a progress report at the Spring Assembly, May 3, 2002 with a final report presented at the Fall Assembly, 2002.

Formal recommendations that need approval of the membership are presented in the form of motions. Please review appropriate sections of Sturgis for how to make motions.

Your contribution to the work of LAUC is very important. Thank you again for your willingness to serve on this LAUC Committee.

Sincerely,

Deborah Murphy
