Diversity Committee Report Update UC Irvine

The UCI campus has a Diversity Development Program sponsored by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. In addition, the UCI Libraries continue to sponsor the "Bridging the Gap Program" recommended by the Diversity Team and administered by the AUL for Administrative Services.

This year's campus wide diversity series meet once every two weeks for 10 weeks (January 19- May 25, 2005). Some of the topics of the series include: 1) Workplace diversity; 2) African Americans; 3) Conflict management across cultures; 4) Asian Americans; 5) Middle Eastern Americans; 6) Hispanic/Latino Americans; 7) Pacific Islander Americans; and 8) Lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender. More information about the UCI campus diversity training programs and resources are available at: http://www.eod.uci.edu/training.html

In its fifth year, “The Bridging the Gap Program,” was recommended by the UCI Libraries Diversity Team who felt it was one of the best ways to overcome "diversity" gaps between staff and librarians. Through this program, staff and librarians are able to bridge the gap by sharing their work cultures, work environments, modes of operation, etc. The long-term goal is to enhance the job performance and to improve the service that the library provides. The result of this program is remarkable.

Diversity Committee Report Update – UC Riverside

UCR Libraries Author Series on Diversity Topic -- Dr. Howard K. Wettstein, Professor of Philosophy, was invited to the UCR Libraries Author Series to speak on his edition, Diaspora and Exiles: Varieties of Jewish Identity. Diaspora and Exiles considers the question of Jewish identity from the perspectives of anthropology, art history, comparative literature, history, philosophy, political theory, and sociology.

Diversity in the Academy: a Campus/Community Summit -- On March 11, 2005, UCR held the first of a series of workshops on diversity, organized by Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Excellence and Diversity, Dr. Yolanda Moses. This first summit, attended by UCR faculty, staff, librarians and administrators as well as community leaders, focused on achieving diversity in the faculty ranks. The summit addresses UCR’s strategic goal of building a more diverse faculty, of mentoring our diverse undergraduate student population, and enriching the academy with varied perspectives and innovative ideas. The summit highlights the challenges we face in increasing the number of women and underrepresented minorities in the academy.

Women Engineers Celebrate E-week -- On February 23, 2005, the Society of Women Engineers held the second annual Women Faculty and Engineers Panel, designed to encourage female students to purse a career in engineering. As part of National Engineers Week, five women who have excelled in the field, including Dr. France A. Cordova, Chancellor of UCR, were selected to speak to an audience of both undergraduate and graduate engineering majors.

The LAUC-R Committee on Cultural Diversity is planning to invite Dr. Yolanda Moses, the Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Excellence and Diversity, to speak about the Universities’ goals and tasks at hand in regard to diversity.

Diversity Committee Report Update – UC Berkeley

The members of the Diversity Committee have met to discuss the possibilities of programs that LAUC might sponsor, discussion again came to the idea of establishing a fellowship or internship opportunity for minority librarians. In 2002-2003, through the efforts of John Berry and Myrtis Cochran, the Library approved in concept having a UCB Library Fellowship dedicated to Diversity. That idea has been on hold contingent on budgetary issues. The committee discussed the need to continue to pursue this proposal, as the budgetary situation improves, and the library begins hiring again. ALA has been approached in regard to possibly reaching out to their Spectrum Scholars as a recruiting tool for such a fellowship (as well as general library positions).

LAUC-B has invited Genaro Padilla, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to speak at the upcoming LAUC-B Spring Assembly on issues of diversity.

Committee members have updated the Diversity Committee website.

There was a campus wide forum, “Diversity in Action: Leanding the National through Research and Practice” on March 3 rd which focused on issues of diversity in regards to student and faculty recruitment as well as research. Both Christopher Edley, Dean of Boalt Law School, and Chancellor Birgeneau spoke on the issue and specifically of their interest in putting the issue of diversity on the table. It is hoped that with the renewed focus on diversity issues on campus, the LAUC-B Diversity Committee will begin to establish more of a presence within the library community.

Diversity Committee Report Update – UC Santa Barbara

The name change reflects coordination of efforts at UCSB to best ensure the continued committment to diversity & the goals of affirmative action for the UCSB community, while maintaining & helping to coordinate efforts in academic preparation and educational partnership programs to increase the ethnic, racial, geographic and socio-economic diversity of students at UCSB and other four-year colleges and universities.
